Choosing a protective tint for olive oil

A bottle's tint protects the oil as much as it presents it. Here is how to weigh protection from light, product visibility and brand image.

Why the tint matters

Light, especially combined with heat, speeds up the oxidation of olive oil: the aromas fade and the oil ages faster. On a permanently lit shelf, a clear bottle lets in far more light than a dark one.

Dark tints (black, amber, olive green) limit the oil's exposure to light.

The tints in the 3P range

Dark tints: black, amber and olive green. They protect the most; choose them for an extra virgin oil that will spend a long time on the shelf or travel far.

Light tints: light green and smoke. They show the colour of the oil and give a lighter look; they protect less from light.

Clear: available on DORKA. It shows the oil as it is but does not protect it from light: keep it for fast-moving products or opaque outer packaging.

Choosing for your product and market

A premium extra virgin oil sold for export or in delicatessens benefits from protection: black, amber or olive green. A fast-moving oil sold in supermarkets or to food service can use a lighter tint if it sells through quickly.

Think about the label too: a wrap-around label covers part of the bottle and adds protection, while a small label leaves the tint to do all the work. The tint is also part of your brand; look at what competitors do on the shelf and decide whether to blend in or stand out.

Tint is not everything

Even in a dark bottle, oil keeps better away from heat and long exposure to light. Say so on the label ("store away from light and heat") and ask your distributors not to keep cases in the sun or near a heat source.

Filling matters too: a small headspace limits the air in contact with the oil. Each bottle's fill level is given on its product page.

The cap

The FT21/29 cap comes in: black, other colours on request. A black cap goes with every tint in the range.

Confirm the tint on a sample

Tints are indicative: a physical swatch book is available on request. Other tints depending on volume. On-screen colours do not replace a sample: the perceived colour changes with wall thickness, the oil and the lighting.

Custom tints: considered depending on volume. Describe what you need in your quote request.

Try before you choose

Change the tint of each model in the 3D configurator, compare the range, then read our PET or glass guide if you are still deciding on the material.

  • PET or glass for olive oil?

Olive oil has long been sold in glass. For export and retail, more and more packers are looking at PET. Here is what to compare before you choose, without taking sides.
